NCAA Odds - No 7 Oregon Ducks at Tennessee Volunteers - Kenjon Barner

The most impressive team performance in the opening week of college football was easily what Oregon Ducks did to New Mexico. True, UNM isn’t a great team, but the Ducks won 72-0 and put up a school-record 720 yards. Those 72 points tied the school’s modern-day record and was Oregon’s largest ever margin of victory against an FBS school. But certainly the seventh-ranked Ducks will be tested on Saturday as they travel across country to play at Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium, one of the most hostile environments in the country. Oregon is a 12-point favorite on Bodog’s NCAA Football Odds.

What’s even more impressive is that Oregon did what it did against the Lobos with a new quarterback due to the offseason dismissal of Jeremiah Masoli. Darron Thomas completed 13 of 23 passes for 220 yards and two scores in his debut as the starter. And the Ducks were without starting tailback LaMichael James, so all backup Kenjon Barner did was score five total touchdowns and run for a career-high 147 yards. Oregon’s average scoring drive on its seven touchdowns with the first team last week lasted just 1:12.

James, meanwhile, set the Pac-10 freshman record with 1,546 rushing yards last season but was suspended the one game for an offseason incident. He is back Saturday, but Ducks coach Chip Kelly said James will share carries with Barner.

The Tennessee Volunteers looked solid in the Vols coaching debut of Derek Dooley. UT beat Tennessee-Martin 50-0 for the school’s first shutout since 2003. The Vols held Tennessee-Martin to three first downs and 142 total yards. New Vols starting QB Matt Simms, the son of former NFL player Phil Simms, was 14-for-24 for 181 yards and a TD, while new No. 1 running back Tauren Poole rushed for 110 yards on 17 carries. UT did lose starting WR Gerald Jones in that game to a broken hand and he’s out at least a few weeks. Sophomore Zach Rogers, who has four career receptions, will start in his place.

This will be the first game ever between Oregon Ducks and Tennessee Volunteers. Since 1970, the Vols are 2-2 in coaching debuts against teams in the top 25.
