Indianapolis Colts 2017-18 NFL Season Preview Football Odds & Free Predictions

The Story:
After two straight seasons with an 8-8 record, the Indianapolis Colts haven’t missed three consecutive postseason since they did it six times from 1988 to 1994. When you have had a ton of success for such a long time, the expectations are always a prerogative and sometimes changes are in order. There were a change of the guard at the general manager position with Chris Ballard taking over the duties of the incompetent Ryan Grigson who made a mess of things by never protecting his franchise quarterback Andrew Luck. It may take Ballard a year or two to repair the damage done by Grigson but at least he made great strides to improve a defense that was one of the worst in the league.

However there are still glaring holes on offense and Luck could be forced again to run for his life whenever he takes the snap. The Colts spent five draft picks on linemen but the highest was taken in the 4th round so how effective the offensive line will be at protecting the quarterback remains to be seen. Luck will still connect with his favorite target WR T.Y Hilton but RB Frank Gore, who went over a 1000 yards last season, is 34 and may not have much left in the tank. And speaking of Luck, there is still no timetable for his return from offseason shoulder surgery and it is entirely possible that the star QB may miss a few games to start the season. Luck’s backup Scott Tolzien has thrown 128 total passes in a six-year career and clearly doesn’t inspire confidence.

The Bottom Line:
If Luck does miss a few games, it is a mystery how he will respond after having been on the shelf for such a long time. The surgery was done on his throwing shoulder after all and it could take some for him to re-acquire his previous form. The clarity of his status is quite discouraging as he continues to miss reps and key drills, the Colts could be in a heap of trouble when they begin their season if they are to be without their franchise quarterback.
