Colorado Avalanche vs. Buffalo Sabres

Avalanche: 15-37-2 (8-18-1 V)
Sabres: 24-23-10 (13-10-4 H)
When: 7:30 PM ET, Thursday, February 16, 2017
Where: KeyBank Center, Buffalo, New York
TV: NBCSN

The Colorado Avalanche are the league’s worst team this year by a landslide. And they’ve followed up a modest two-game winning streak by losing their next four. That includes the first three games of this current five game road trip.

They’ve been outscored 16-6 in those four games with all the losses to Metropolitan Division foes.

The Avalanche did play the Devils close in their last game before going down 3-2. They were outshot 40-30 overall with goalie Jeremy Smith putting on quite a show.

They’ll be visiting a Buffalo team that’s been trading wins and losses all month. They are 4-3-1 in February. The Sabres are coming off a big 3-2 road win over second place Ottawa on Tuesday night. The Senators had won three in a row heading into it.

Robin Lehner turned aside 39 of the 41 shots he faced and Buffalo responded with the only two goals of the third period cementing the comeback.

In their last eight games, they’ve scored 21 and allowed 20. Jack Eichel (1-8-9), Kyle Okposo (3-4-7) and Ryan O’Reilly (3-4-7) have been leading the way.

Since the start of February, Colorado is 2-5-0 scoring 15 and allowing 23. Mikko Rantanen (3-3-6) and Gabriel Landeskog (2-4-6) have been especially hot of late.

These are two teams that play a fast, up-tempo game. They feature some young talent, but Lehner has been playing very well of late with a 2.15 GAA and .946% save percentage this month. Buffalo is clearly farther along in their rebuild and are three points out of a playoff spot. This game should be theirs for the taking
