Detroit Lions 2017-18 NFL Season Preview Football Odds & Free Predictions

The Story:
Many observers projected an offensive decline from the Detroit Lions with the shocking retirement of wide receiver and future Hall-of-Famer Calvin Johnson but the numbers basically stayed the same and were not for the injured index finger which quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered with four games to go in the season, it would certainly have been significantly loftier. Stafford was enjoying a fine season until the setback and the Lions lost their last three games of the season and were denied a first division title since 1993. They eventually made the postseason but with Stafford clearly not himself, they went to lose 26-6 to the Seahawks in the NFC Wild Card game. The Lions won 9 games last season and there is no reason why the number of wins could fluctuate this year with a healthy Stafford. His offensive line was upgraded big time with the signing of G T.J. Lang and OT Ricky Wagner and not only their presence will help Stafford identifying his receivers, they could also pave the way for the tandem of running backs consisting of Theo Riddick and Ameer Abdullah.

Abdullah missed 14 games last season with a broken foot and has impressed thus far in training camp and looks to be a lock to get most of the touches. Riddick also missed some significant time last season playing in 10 games and with the two healthy, Stafford will have a slew of options. The receiving duties will be tasked upon the familiar duo of Golden Tate and Marvin Jones who combined for 2,007 yards last season. Anquan Boldin has left for greener pastures and his replacement as the third receiver has yet to be confirmed. Tight end Eric Ebron has improved in each of his three seasons since being drafted 10th overall back in 2014. Injuries were also detrimental on the defensive side of the ball and the Lions addressed the situation by reinforcing the unit with multiple signings this offseason. DE Ezekiel Ansah should be back at full strength after dealing with an ankle issue throughout his 2016 campaign. The Pro-Bowler saw his sack production dwindled down from 14.5 in 2015 to just two last season. He will need to rebound as last year’s sack leader DE Kerry Hyder has suffered a significant Achilles injury last Sunday and his status to start the season is still in doubt

The Bottom Line:
There were some major upgrades on offense that could elevate the unit as elite and if Stafford and his crew can stay healthy, the Lions could light up the scoreboard at will. The defense can hold its own but Hyder’s injury sheds a shadow of gloom over an entity prone to go down into combat. If the Lions can battle their inner demons, they have all the ingredients to unseat the Packers in the division and I believe they will.

Detroit Lions Last year’s record: 9-7
